Your Child’s First Dental Visit: When Should It Happen?
29 October 2026 · Smile Dental Clinic
A child’s first dental visit is recommended when the first tooth appears or no later than the first birthday. Early visits allow the dental team to check development, discuss brushing and fluoride, and help parents understand habits that may affect teeth.
Use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and follow age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste advice from your dentist. Avoid putting a child to sleep with sugary drinks, and encourage water between meals when appropriate.
If a child has tooth pain, swelling, trauma or visible decay, do not wait for a routine visit.
